Notes

Inspired by an article in Knickerbocker magazine (May 1839) entitled "Mocha Dick: or the White Whale of the Pacific," Melville's most famous work is the story of a whaling ship, the Pequod, and it's hunt for the infamous white whale known as Moby Dick.

Early publications were not readily accepted by critics and readers. In fact, the first British publication was censored for political and moral content. It was only following his death that Moby Dick became known as a major American classic and one of Melville's greatest achievements.
